What is a Column?

ColumnA column is a pillar that is used when constructing buildings. It may be used as a structural support or simply as decoration.

Columns have been a part of buildings for centuries. From Rome to Egypt, columns were used to support heavy architectural elements. They were often used outside of temples and government buildings, and some were painted with various images. In the past, columns were made of one large piece of stone or several stones stacked together. Some columns are still used as systems of support, but they are also decorative additions to many buildings. Columns are currently constructed from a variety of materials, such as wood, composite materials and plaster. They can either be simple or very ornate. Plain columns are used frequently in plantation-style homes, while more ornate pillars may be used for large office buildings or mansions. Columns may even be used for interior support or decoration.
