What is Color Variation?

Color VariationColor variation refers to the different colors within wood. It is often the reason that a wood is said to have character.

Color variation is the range of colors that can occur within a species of wood. For example, Western Red Cedar may have tones of red, brown, pink or yellow. The color variation can be enhanced with clear or light finishing products. However, dark stains may decrease the amount of color variation in the wood. Color variations make natural woods very popular for many home projects. Color variations also give depth and contrast to cabinets, flooring, paneling and furniture. Many of the characteristics of each type of wood come from the color variations within it. The knots and burls that can be part of the wood can also contribute to color variations because they have a different texture, density and moisture content. Color variations allow homeowners to choose pieces that will add character to their rooms.
