What Your Myers-Briggs Personality Says About Your Kitchen Style

By: Andrew Saladino | min

Find your kitchen design style based on your Myers-Briggs Personality

We often find ourselves pouring over magazines, Pinterest, and home decor blogs to find inspiration to revamp our kitchen and living spaces. And although it's tempting to jump on the bandwagon of unique design styles and trendy color schemes, choosing your design style according to your personality and needs might be a more practical and beneficial way to start your kitchen renovation moodboard.

Knowing how your personality can help you better determine the kitchen layout and size that better fits your needs, and put together a space that is in tune with your lifestyle. You might have an idea  what your personality type is, but have you ever taken a test to be sure? Find out by taking the Myers-Briggs Personality Test. This test assigns you a personality type from a set of 16, by measuring your psychological preferences. It can help define how you see the world and how you communicate, as well as your strengths and weaknesses.

Then, check out the flowchart below to find the perfect kitchen design style suited for your personality or personality group. Keep reading below to see what your personality says about your ideal design style and get tips on how to implement it throughout your home.

Determine Your Ideal Kitchen Design Style

Your Myers-Briggs personality test results will have a four-letter word where each indicates where your personality stands on four different scales: Extraversion or Introversion, Sensing or Intuition, Thinking or Feeling, and Judging or Perceiving. Below is a brief description of what it means to be dominant on either side of each of these scales.

  1. Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I): determines how you direct your energy with the outside world. An extravert feels energized after a social interaction whereas, an introvert recharges after spending time alone.
  2. Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N): determines how you gather information. Sensing personalities use their five senses and facts whereas, Intuition personalities find deeper meanings through possibilities, patterns, and abstract theories.
  3. Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F): determines how you make decisions based on the way you gather information. If you're Thinking-dominant, you tend to be logical and objective. If you're Feeling, you tend to consider emotion when making decisions.
  4. Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P): determines how you view and deal with the outside world. Judging personalities prefer rules and structure whereas, Perceiving tend to be more open-minded and adaptable.

These 16 personalities fall into one of four different groups which are sentinels, explorers, analysts, and diplomats. Since sentinels and explorers are both sensing, meaning they process information based on their immediate surroundings and five senses, versus analysts and explorers who process information abstractly through patterns, impressions, possibilities, the flowchart below starts by dividing personality types between these two scales.

Since these two scales determine whether you're more observant or introspective, it will help you narrow down on a kitchen design that flows naturally with the way you gather information and therefore, start your day each morning on the right track. From there, follow the rest of the questions to find your ideal kitchen style. Keep reading below to see if your result fully matches your personality type. If it doesn't, consider combining your result with the recommended style for your personality to put together a space that's uniquely your own!

What Your Personality Says About Your Design Style

Now that you know your design, find out whether it matches your personality. Read about how your ideal kitchen design supports your personality traits and tips on how to add this design style to your kitchen or home.

INTJ and INTP: Minimalist

Minimalist kitchen.

Both of these personality types are quite rational thinkers with a thirst for knowledge. You're excited about the unknown and enjoy both analyzing and strategizing to find innovative solutions. A minimalist design style will help create a harmonious space to help your mind hone in on the task at hand. As both personality types are quite self-critical, having an organized kitchen with little clutter can help you start your mornings with a small sense of accomplishment.

Tip: Choose an open concept kitchen layout with light concrete or tile flooring to create an airy and cohesive space.

ENTJ and ENTP: Modern

Modern kitchen.

As inventors and mobilizers, you're natural-born leaders who always have their eye on the horizon. A modern style kitchen will help bring out your personality's curiosity for new things and a natural desire to lead. A sleek and clean modern look can also help keep you organized and ready to make a plan to achieve your goals.

Tip: Opt for sleek silver hardware and a glossy finish on your cabinets to achieve a trendy modern kitchen look.

ENFP and ENFJ: Scandanavian

Scandinavian kitchen.

Enthusiastic and charismatic, ENFP and ENFJ personality types know how to brighten anyone's day. They're both free-spirited and curious thinkers who enjoy dabbling into different hobbies and projects. As they're also known to be inspiring and comforting friends, the neutral and inviting feeling of a Scandinavian style kitchen will be perfect for hosting dinners. A bright, open space can also help nurture your creativity and help keep a relatively organized space as you jump between tasks and projects.

Tip: Choose a natural oak kitchen counter and pair it with white kitchen shelves to achieve the Scandinavian kitchen look.

INFP and INFJ: Cottage

Cottage kitchen.

A cottage style kitchen is ideal for INFP and INFJ personality types which are also referred to as healers and counselors, respectively. You enjoy listening to others and making them feel at ease so whether it's a small friend group or a large dinner party, your friends always feel at home around you. Bright white spaces with greenery and natural wood will bring your space calm and tranquility to let your creative and poetic thoughts flourish.

Tip: White cabinets and wood finishes help achieve a cozy, cottage style kitchen. Be sure to add potted plants or flower vases for a warm, welcoming vibe.

ISTP and ESTP: Rustic

Rustic kitchen.

Also known as crafters and composers, ISTP and ESTP personalities love to live on the edge and tinker with different jobs and hobbies. You enjoy working with your hands and are often spontaneous and open-minded artists. With that in mind, you need a space that will look great throughout various artistic and spontaneous endeavors. A rustic kitchen and home design is great at hiding dings and dents and gives you sturdy spaces to keep working on your craft.

Tip: A rustic kitchen is easy to achieve. Try refinishing your old kitchen cabinets to easily create a shabby chic look.

ESFP and ISFP: Eclectic

Eclectic kitchen.

Both incredibly artistic and creative personalities, ESFP and ISFPs love exploring and trying new things. Colorful spaces showcasing your art collection or trinkets collected throughout your adventures will help your home reflect your personality. Waking up each morning in an eclectic home will help inspire your next artistic endeavor and encourage your natural upbeat outlook on life.

Tip: In addition to playing with plenty of colors and textures, be sure to plan out how to best display your art or trinkets you've collected throughout your adventures.

ESFJ and ESTJ: Farmhouse

Farmhouse kitchen.

ESFJ and ESTJ are both caring, eager to help, and very family-oriented. They enjoy having their loved ones close and are natural-born leaders who like to get things done. A farmhouse kitchen is perfect for those who enjoy to host large family gatherings (pets included!) and even cook for those they love. A large, open concept farmhouse style kitchen will provide the perfect space for your family and friends to enjoy plenty of quality time together.

Tip: Design an open concept kitchen with white cabinets and a large island to make meal prepping a family-friendly activity.

ISFJ and ISTJ: Traditional

Traditional kitchen.

While ISFJ types are warm protectors and ISTJ are known for being reliable, fact-minded individuals, they both prefer traditional environments with a fixed set of rules. Therefore, a traditional kitchen is the perfect style to make these personality types feel comfortable.

You'll be able to keep things organized and feel grounded in a perfectly functional and beautiful kitchen space.

Tip: Opt for elegant hardware, hanging light fixtures, and granite countertops to build your traditional kitchen.

For Intuition personality types like Mediators, Advocates, Champions, and Givers a kitchen is a place to gather friends around and have a good time which is why they can't resist the charm of a cottage or Scandinavian style kitchen. Commanders, Debaters, Architects, and Thinkers prefer modern or minimalist designs as they want their home organized and enjoy clean lines.

Sensing personalities like Caregivers and Directors prefer the farmhouse kitchen style to host their entire family while Protectors and Inspectors find traditional kitchens appealing. Rustic or eclectic kitchen styles speak to Crafters, Persuaders, Performers, and Artists because they leave plenty of room for personal touches.

Whether you decide to revamp your living room, install new kitchen cabinets, or make a small change to your decor to better fit your personality, you'll be able to put together a style that perfectly reflects who you are.
