Brand New Modern Kitchen
Brand New Modern Kitchen

There are countless design trends out that you see in Home and Garden and other home magazines.  Anything from Tuscan inspired kitchens to country cottages, but today, there is a growing interest in the modern style.  This sleek, linear design can be incorporated into your kitchen cabinets to give you that contemporary feel.

Without spending an arm and a leg you can bring a modern feel into your run down kitchen.  Start by choosing the cabinetry.  Frameless kitchen cabinets are the most modern.  Also opt for a slab door.  These plain, straight lined cabinets will wind up being the focal point of your kitchen.  If you really want to push the envelope and add a little more spice into your kitchen, you can look into the colored laminate cabinetry.  This European inspired look is splashed across the pages of magazines leading the modern trend.

Helpful hint: to look modern means to be modern!  Don’t go and spend a fortune on your cabinets because that’s what you used to have to do to get quality.  Many stock lines offer slab door frameless cabinets, and while they may not come in a color you want, order them anyway!  With these stock cabinets, you will save so much money that you can refinish them yourself if you are truly unsatisfied with the color.  A little elbow grease for a huge discount still sounds like a score to me!

To tie together the modern look keep things simple.  It’s all about the lines and the cleanliness.  Opt for contrasting colors like white and black, but don’t be afraid to add a little color in!  This will make it your own as opposed to simply achieving a look!

The Importance Of Kitchen Storage Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinet Storage Space
Lots Of Kitchen Cabinet Storage Space!

Storage is always an reoccuring issue.  Whether it is in the bathroom with toiletries spilling from the bathroom vanity or the coat closet stuffed shut to the point of hazard; we never have enough room.  This issue is not foreign to the kitchen.  It seems that we collect and store random artifacts, food, and dinnerware in our kitchen, somewhat like hoarders!

If you’re not the Feng Shui type of person where you can clean and cleanse, then you need to do something about the sotrage.  To many of us, adding extra cabinets are not an option because our floor plan does not allow for it, and we can definitely not be adding pantries or walk in closets.  So what is a gal (or guy) to do?

Contact the manufacturer of your kitchen cabinets, and look into organizers.  They come in all shapes and sizes, and they serve purposes in a wide range.  From cutlery dividers, to spice racks, and garbage can roll outs, you can eliminate the counter top clutter!  You can also look into appliance garages.  Though your espresso maker is gorgeous, and maybe you couldn’t wait to get that new blender, sometimes you just wish they would go away.  But where to?  Try investing in an appliance garage.  This will house and store all of your counter top appliances.

Budgeting for Your Remodel

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Setting up a budget is crucial when you are planning a cabinet remodel.  There are going to be knick knacks that catch your eye that you are going to think you cannot live without and unforeseen labor costs that you need to plan for.  Having a concrete budget in mind before you begin the project will help you stay on track, and you may even be able to plan for a few unnecessary but killer accessories.

When you start throwing your budget numbers around think of the key ingredients to your new kitchen.  To some it may be the kitchen cabinets.  If this is where you wish to splurge, set aside a larger fraction of the budget to the kitchen cabinets.  If you are looking to go with commercial appliances like that Viking SubZero fridge, then you know to allot a decent amount of the budget to appliances.  Do not keep expanding the budget to fit in all the things that you like, because let’s face it, you can find design pot holders to add in to the budget if it’s flexible.

Some people find working with a budget to be impossible, I know because that’s me.  Luckily, there are great ways to get that high end look at a low end price.  If you want those fabulous custom cabinets, but did not set aside enough money for them, are you going to go cabinetless?  Of course not, but don’t give up your vision!  Try looking at stock cabinets to help keep you within your budget, but still give you the ideal style.

Importance Of Picking A Color Scheme

Modern White Kitchen Cabinets
Modern White Kitchen Cabinets

When you begin to remodel your kitchen you have a million thoughts running through your head. Do I buy stock cabinetry or custom cabinets? Do I want cherry wood or maple? Should we incorporate an island into the floor plan or stick with the basic layout? What color scheme am I looking to incorporate? All these questions can drive you insane and turn a pleasant experience into a headache. When you first start remodeling pick a scheme or theme and go with that.

An easy way to have an enjoyable design process is to pick a color scheme. This decision could be as simple as choosing between warm or cool tones. Once you have made up your mind on either a sunny and warm or cool and regal you can start to incorporate the aspects of the kitchen. If you opted to use warm colors throughout your kitchen you may want to use some white cabinetry. The use of white cabinetry up against a rusty red or mustard yellow wall will bring out that morning sunshine no matter what time of day or night it is. These white kitchen cabinets can be made rustic by an antiqued paint job, or they can be more modern with the use of white laminate. However, if you want to have a more elegant feel to your kitchen, pairing lavender or purple wall with a Cabernet finished cherry cabinetry will emit a regal feel.

Tackling the renovation process issue by issue instead of becoming overwhelmed looking at the big picture will make this transition flow smoothly. Who said remodeling needs to be work? It can be just as enjoyable as if you were watching it on HGTV.

Kitchen Makeover with Black Cabinets
Home MakeOver with Black Cabinets

With anything in vision, there is a focal point. When you walk into a new home your eyes are automatically drawn to the kitchen. The kitchen is what changes a house into your home. It is where many memories have been created, decisions have been made, and holidays have been prepared. You and your family or friends have sat in the kitchen for countless hours laughing, so this room should emit emotions. While a complete gut and remodel may be out of your reach due to the economic turmoil, there are ways that you can brighten up your drab kitchen and bring that sense of you back into your home.

You may dream of your ideal kitchen, but chances are, that kind of money if tough to let go of in today’s economy. Without breaking the bank, you can liven up your kitchen. The first idea is to remodel your kitchen in steps. Whether you start with a fresh coat of paint over your existing cabinetry to give them a face lift, purchasing new kitchen cabinets, or you may opt to put down new clay tiling. Investing in your kitchen one stage at a time makes it more feasible, and it slowly renovates the home. You may also try to splurge on one appliance or major kitchen item at a time. If you have been eyeing that new espresso maker in Sharper Image or the new Viking food processor, buy it! This new appliance will bring a little more life and a fresh style to your kitchen.

Bring color into your kitchen. As you spend most of your waking hours in the kitchen as a family, it should emit sunshine and warmth. You can start by painting the walls a different color. If you have a cool tone on the walls now, switch it up and go with a warm rusty red. Maybe your walls have a fresh paint job; if that’s the case, try accessorizing your kitchen. Like a good outfit, a kitchen needs accessories to compliment the over all look. Try adding colorful table ware, or maybe purchase a throw rug for under the kitchen table.

No matter what your budget is or style, there are ways to bring that passion back into the kitchen. You no longer have to be stuck with the same dark and boring kitchen. Start stage by stage and continue to renovate one thing at a time.  One renovation that can make a dramatic difference is your kitchen cabinets. No matter what you decide, the end result will be a kitchen you never want to leave, that reminds you, home is where the heart is.
