Home Depot Kitchen Cabinets Review: Are They Worth It?

By: Andrew Saladino | min

The Home Depot entryway -- are the kitchen cabinets good?

Maybe you've found an amazing new home but the cabinets are just ugly. Or, perhaps you've had the same look for the past decade and want to try something new. So, should you go with Home Depot kitchen cabinets?

Updating your cabinets can improve the look and functionality of your kitchen. The Home Depot makes buying cabinets easy and cheap, but there's more to the story. Let's get into the pros and cons of Home Depot kitchen cabinets.

Overview of Home Depot Kitchen Cabinets

With new cabinet designs, you can make better use of storage space and improve the workflow in your kitchen. Adding upper cabinets frees up counter space and adds additional storage, as well. You can get Home Depot kitchen cabinets in a few different ways:

  • In-stock cabinets
  • Cabinet makeover (replacing doors and drawers only)
  • Custom cabinets

For the DIYer, the in-stock cabinet cabinet selection makes choosing and receiving cabinets easy and fast. It's also the cheapest option out of the three. In-stock Home Depot kitchen cabinets come in a few different main styles:

  • Modern
  • Transitional
  • Farmhouse
  • Classic
  • Industrial
  • Cottage

There are also between six and ten brands available to choose from, each with different styles and price points.

Construction & Price

Many cheaper Home Depot kitchen cabinets use particle board for construction.

As far as construction goes, in-stock Home Depot kitchen cabinets start with basic construction and move into mid-tier construction. Here's a general idea of the different construction tiers:

  • Basic: The back and sides are made of particle board/furniture board which is 3/8 inch thick (that's on the thin side). The cabinets may have solid wood drawers and door frames. Hardware is basic (no ball-bearing slides or soft-close). Drawer joinery is basic, not dovetail.
  • Mid-tier: The back and sides are mostly plywood or all-plywood construction, with solid wood drawers and door frames. May use soft-close hardware, but most drawers are still side-mounted (not undermount). Drawers also don't use dovetail construction at this level.

Many people find very affordable cabinets at The Home Depot. But it pays to look at the cabinet construction and see what you're buying. Ideally, you'd want the back and sides of the cabinet to be made of plywood for its strength, and the faces and drawers to be solid wood. Most of the budget cabinets don't have this construction. They might work for a while, but you probably wouldn't want your forever kitchen to have particle board cabinets.

Plywood holds screws better, it resists dents, and can bear more weight. It's easy to tell if a board is fiber or plywood. Fiberboard has a sponge-like appearance on the edges, while plywood will look like a sandwich with different layers of wood.

Overall, customers generally have positive experiences ordering cabinets from The Home Depot, though there is the occasional case of damage or poor customer service. Negative Home Depot Kitchen Cabinet Reviews

"Too bad these cabinet makers did a shoddy job putting the laminate on. The cabinets are good and sturdy, but after only five years all the laminate edges are coming loose." – From Shelta

"Material is very cheap. Even using a new drill bit the door chipped, very difficult to drill through material. Had to re-purchase new handles to cover unsightly holes in front of the cabinet." – From Mona56
